Season 3, Episode 4: Marriage in the Bible, Part 3
Jeanne and Jennifer chat in this episode about how translation affects modern reader understanding of the Bible’s portrayals of marriage. The mistranslation from Hebrew into English of “man” as “husband,” “woman” as “wife,” and “to take” as “to marry” leave readers with the impression that biblical texts picture a form of marriage that resembles what 21st-century Western folks think of when they hear the word “marriage.” Biblical texts don’t picture anything like what contemporary Americans call “marriage.”
